IIT has established a partnership with the Olga Lengyel Institute for Holocaust Studies and Human Rights (TOLI) since 2015, to provide professional development opportunities for teachers in Romania.
Each year, in collaboration with TOLI and the Elie Wiesel National Institute for the Study of the Holocaust in Romania, we organize a five-day seminar for a group of 30-35 teachers from Romania.
The goal of the seminar is to improve the quality of Holocaust and human rights education in Romania. The objectives of the seminar are:
- To develop a coherent, fact-based understanding of the Holocaust among teachers;
- To enhance teachers’ awareness of the impact of stereotypes, prejudices, and
discrimination at the individual, group, and societal levels; - To promote positive values for life in a diverse world, such as respect,
interculturalism, dialogue, and appreciation of others; - To increase teachers’ knowledge about the Roma genocide;
- To develop teachers’ skills in teaching the Holocaust in an innovative, studentcentered manner and in implementing local or international projects;
- To foster teachers’ ability to teach in an interdisciplinary way, integrating Holocaust education with human rights education and intercultural education.
