IIT in partnership with GIGA German Institute of Global and Area Studies STIFTUNG (coordinator), Democracy and Human Rights Education in Europe (Belgium), Demokrative – Initiative für politische Bildung (Switzerland), Asociación cultural Da2 Trucados (Spain), and Culture Goes Europe (CGE) – Soziokulturelle Initiative ERFURT EV (Germany), launched the implementation of the project Democracy and Games: Analog and Digital Game-Based-Learning Tools for Youth Work (DEMOGAMES), funded through the Erasmus+ Programme, KA205 – Strategic Partnerships for Youth. The project ran for 36 months, from September 2019 to August 2022.
DEMOGAMES advanced democracy education by addressing learning about, through, and for democracy. The project was based on a didactic approach to game-based learning and applied it to teaching young citizens about democracy by playing analog and digital games. Active participation in these games sparked young people’s interest in the subject and supported experiential learning. The project included several activities for young people and youth work practitioners to encourage discussion of democracy-related topics beyond their local, regional, or national experiences.
The main outcome of the DEMOGAMES project was a comprehensive “Democracy Game Box” (D-BOX), containing a collection of analog and digital games designed to help practitioners (youth workers, trainers, and teachers) teach democracy from different angles and engage young people in participatory learning. The game box was accompanied by a handbook and many and practical training materials for practitioners, including examples and exercises for using the games effectively.
