The Intercultural Institute Timisoara (IIT) is a non-governmental organisation, autonomous and without financial profit, with educational, cultural, civic and scientific activity, without political goals, that promotes intercultural values, active citizenship and respect for human rights.
IIT was established in 1992, with the support of local authorities and the Council of Europe.
We collaborate with a broad network of partners worldwide, including NGOs, universities, public institutions, and subject-matter experts within our fields of interest.
WHAT WE DO
INTERCULTURAL EDUCATION
Intercultural education is a key component of our activities. Since its establishment, IIT has advocated for the introduction of intercultural education in the school curricula, in Romania, in Europe and beyond.
Moreover, IIT is working at European and international levels to promote intercultural learning in non-formal education, intercultural dialogue and intercultural project management, through projects targeting various groups such as: youth, civil servants, migrants, minority and majority activists, journalists, civil society, cultural institutions, etc.
HUMAN RIGHTS EDUCATION
The democratic citizenship component of our programs encompasses a wide range of activities from different fields, such as: education, art, social inclusion, social responsibility through sustainable economy, active participation of various citizens groups (youth, women, minorities), promotion and respect of human rights.
ROMA
Since its establishment IIT has devoted an important part of its resources to the integration of Roma. In collaboration with Roma associations IIT has developed a wide range of projects focused on: education, development of Roma civil society, anti-discrimination and combatting stereotypes, representation of Roma in the media, consolidation of dialogue between public authorities and Roma communities.
YOUTH
Youth are at the same time beneficiaries and equal partners for dialogue and development of projects and public policies that target them and the communities in which they live.
CULTURE
IIT is a pioneer at national level in the field of cultural policy development and evaluation for the public authorities. We have developed policies since 1999 in a participative system – with a bottom-up approach and founded on sociological research and ex-ante statistical data and with ex-post evaluations. They rapidly became good practice examples and have been disseminated at national and international level by the Ministry of Culture, the Romanian Parliament – Chamber of Deputies, The European Commission Delegation, Council of Europe and the European Cultural Foundation.
DIVERSITY
Through its activities IIT acknowledges and promotes diversity as richness, not as a problem. Differences in terms of culture, ethnicity, race, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, age, physical abilities, religious beliefs, political beliefs, or other ideologies are viewed as a resource and are carefully addressed both as transversal dimensions of our programs and as specific topics for various projects.
MEDIA
One of the main vehicles for promoting diversity, but also for perpetuating stereotypes and prejudices that inevitably lead to discrimination is the media. We work to support journalists and media organisations develop a positive approach to diversity and present more nuanced perspectives in their materials. We also implement programs to develop readers’ critical thinking and their ability to filter through explicit or implicit bias.
